Transportation programs may provide local rides, gas assistance, commercial travel, or volunteer flights. Availability, eligibility, advance-notice requirements, and service areas vary.

American Cancer Society

Rides & Lodging

The American Cancer Society’s Road To Recovery program may provide free rides to cancer-related medical appointments in participating communities. Its Hope Lodge program provides free lodging for eligible patients and caregivers who must travel away from home for treatment.

Medical Travel

Mercy Medical Angels helps eligible patients obtain free non-emergency transportation for medically necessary care. Depending on the patient’s needs and location, assistance may include volunteer flights, commercial travel, or ground transportation support.

Availability Travel within the United States and its territories
Planning Apply as early as possible; documentation may be required
Before traveling: Explain mobility, medication, dietary, privacy, prayer, and caregiver needs when submitting the request.

Air Care Alliance

Volunteer Flights

Air Care Alliance connects patients with charitable aviation organizations that arrange free, non-emergency flights to distant medical care, specialized treatment, clinical trials, second opinions, and other qualifying services.

Best for Long-distance travel when driving is impractical
Important Passengers generally must be medically stable enough to fly
Cost Flights through participating volunteer organizations are free
Before requesting a flight: Ask about baggage limits, caregiver travel, medication storage, restroom access, mobility support, and prayer needs.

Finding a place to stay near care

Some lodging programs are free, while others provide reduced rates or affordable accommodations. Referrals, distance requirements, treatment status, and room availability may affect eligibility.

Lodging Directory

Joe’s House is an online directory that helps cancer patients and families locate discounted or charitable lodging near hospitals and cancer-treatment centers across the United States.

North Carolina

SECU Family House provides affordable lodging and supportive services for adult patients and their loved ones who travel to UNC Hospitals for serious medical care.

Best for Adult patients traveling to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill
Eligibility Generally more than 50 miles from Chapel Hill with a UNC care-team referral
Access Ask a UNC clinician, social worker, or care manager for a referral

Ronald McDonald House

Pediatric Families

Ronald McDonald House programs help families stay near a child receiving hospital care. Houses may offer lodging at little to no cost, along with meals, family spaces, and nonclinical support. Policies are determined by the local chapter.

Availability Local and international chapters; rooms may have waiting lists
Access Contact the child’s hospital social-service department or local House
Ask the local House: Whether halal, vegetarian, or allergy-sensitive meals are available and whether families may use the kitchen or a private space for prayer.

Support for life outside the hospital

Cancer treatment can affect meals, household tasks, housing, utility bills, transportation expenses, and other everyday responsibilities. These programs may help patients and families find practical support.

Cleaning for a Reason

Home Cleaning

Cleaning for a Reason connects people undergoing cancer treatment with participating residential cleaning companies. Eligible patients may receive two free home-cleaning visits when a provider is available in their area.

Availability United States and Canada; depends on participating cleaners
Cost Free for accepted patients when local service is available
Before the cleaning: Share any preferences involving footwear in the home, fragrances, pets, privacy, modesty, or the cleaner’s gender.

Family Reach Financial Resource Center

Everyday Expenses

Family Reach’s Financial Resource Center helps people affected by cancer identify support for everyday costs such as food, housing, utilities, transportation, and other nonmedical needs. It includes searchable resources and access to resource navigation.

211 connects people with local health and human-service programs. Callers may receive referrals for food, rent, utilities, housing, transportation, caregiver services, and other community needs.

Ask specifically about: Halal-food assistance, mosque-based programs, Muslim charities, interpreters, culturally familiar providers, and transportation near your treatment center.

Questions to ask before making arrangements

Confirm details directly with each program before relying on a ride, flight, room, meal, or household service.

How much notice is required? Transportation and lodging programs may need applications, referrals, medical documentation, or advance scheduling.
Can a caregiver come? Ask whether a caregiver, parent, child, or other companion can travel or stay with the patient.
What expenses are included? Confirm whether the program covers airfare, fuel, parking, local transportation, lodging fees, meals, or taxes.
Can religious and cultural needs be accommodated? Ask about prayer space, halal food, kitchen access, privacy, modesty, language assistance, and family arrangements.
