An oncology social worker, patient navigator, financial counselor, or billing advocate may help you apply for hospital assistance, appeal insurance decisions, identify grants, and gather medical documentation. Ask for help before bills become overdue whenever possible.

Help with treatment and healthcare costs

Assistance funds often open and close based on available funding. Eligibility may depend on diagnosis, treatment status, insurance, income, residence, and the expenses being requested.

Case Management

Patient Advocate Foundation provides free one-to-one case management for people with serious or chronic illnesses who are facing healthcare-access or financial barriers. Case managers may help address insurance denials, medical debt, disability, employment, benefits, and access to care.

CancerCare Financial Assistance

Cancer-Specific Support

CancerCare offers limited financial assistance, resource navigation, and support from oncology social workers. Available programs may help with selected cancer-related or practical expenses, depending on diagnosis, location, treatment status, income, and available funding.

TotalAssist

Healthcare Grants

TotalAssist is the charitable patient-assistance program of Patient Advocate Foundation. It offers disease-specific and health-equity grants that may help eligible patients with out-of-pocket healthcare expenses such as medication copays, insurance premiums, treatment costs, and selected travel costs.

HealthWell Foundation

Copays & Premiums

HealthWell Foundation provides financial assistance through disease-specific funds. Eligible insured patients may receive help with copays, insurance premiums, deductibles, and selected out-of-pocket healthcare costs.

Check before applying: Confirm that your diagnosis and prescribed treatment are covered by an open fund. Do not delay treatment while waiting for grant approval.

Support when cancer affects your ability to work

Eligibility for disability benefits and workplace protections depends on individual circumstances. Gather medical records and documentation explaining how cancer or treatment limits daily activities and work.

Social Security Disability Benefits

Federal Benefits

The Social Security Administration administers disability programs for people whose medical condition prevents or substantially limits work. Social Security Disability Insurance generally requires sufficient work history, while Supplemental Security Income has separate income and resource requirements.

Workplace Support

Cancer and Careers provides information about workplace rights, disclosure, reasonable accommodations, leave, insurance, job searching, returning to work, and balancing cancer treatment with employment.

Best for Employees, job seekers, survivors, caregivers, and employers
Format United States online education and selected coaching programs
Cost Many resources and programs are free
Possible accommodations: Modified hours, remote work, additional breaks, a quieter workspace, schedule flexibility for treatment, or changes that address fatigue and other side effects.

Cancer Treatment Deferment Request

U.S. federal student-loan borrowers undergoing cancer treatment may qualify for a special deferment. This option does not apply automatically and does not generally apply to private student loans.

Federal Cancer Treatment Deferment

U.S. Federal Student Loans

Eligible borrowers may request a deferment on qualifying federal Direct, FFEL, and Perkins loans while receiving cancer treatment and for six months after treatment ends. The official request form also allows borrowers to request forbearance for loans that do not qualify for the deferment.

Documentation Certification from a legally authorized doctor of medicine or osteopathy, or equivalent documentation
Duration During cancer treatment and for six months afterward
Submit to Your federal loan holder or servicer; separate requests may be needed for different loan holders
Important: Interest treatment varies by loan type, and a servicer may require a new physician certification if treatment continues beyond one year. Contact your servicer and confirm approval before assuming payments have been paused. Private-loan relief policies are determined by the private lender.

Everyday Needs

Family Reach’s Financial Resource Center helps people affected by cancer find support for food, housing, utilities, transportation, medical bills, and other financial concerns. Visitors can search local resources, review educational materials, and request personalized resource navigation.

Cost Resource-center services are free; grant availability varies
When requesting navigation: Explain household size, dependents, transportation barriers, dietary needs, housing risks, utility concerns, and extended-family responsibilities.

Tips before applying for assistance

Programs have different rules and limited funding. Preparing documents in advance can make the process easier.

Gather key documents You may need proof of diagnosis, treatment, income, insurance, prescriptions, household size, bills, or a letter from your care team.
Apply early and confirm deadlines Funds may close without notice, and some programs cannot reimburse expenses that were paid before approval.
Keep a communication log Record the organization, representative, date, phone number, documents submitted, confirmation number, and next steps.
Ask about Muslim community assistance Local mosques and Muslim charities may offer zakat, sadaqah, food, transportation, or emergency assistance. Eligibility and confidentiality policies vary.
